What is Electrical Muscle Stimulation?

Electrical muscle stimulation, also called EMS, is a type of therapy in which electrical impulses are generated by a machine and travel through electrodes into your muscles. The electrical impulses attempt to mimic the central nervous system's impulses and cause the muscle to contract.  Electrical muscle stimulation is generally used in therapeutic settings, but some athletes use it for sports training and performance purposes as well.
