What is Sciatica?
Sciatica is pain that starts in the back or buttocks and radiates down one or both of the legs. It is caused by compression of the sciatic nerve that runs from the low back down into the foot. The cause of compression can vary from a herniated disc to muscle tension or something less common such as a tumor, bony growth or infection. Depending on where the sciatic nerve is compressed will determine exactly where you feel the pain, which may radiate to the back of the knee or right down the back of the leg to the foot.
• Pain that shoots down the leg.
• Numbness and weakness in the affected area.
