The patient will often complain of well-localized low back pain with some hip/buttock or leg pain above the knee. The onset is often sudden after a simple misjudged movement or arising from a flexed position.
The facet joints in the spine are where each vertebra connects together making a joint. The facet and its capsule may be the source of pain. Each facet receives neural inneravation from two different spianl levels. Synovial folds or Meniscoids (tiny pads of cartilage) may become entrapped or pinched and cause pain. Another process that may predispose the facet-mediated pain is degeneration, seen more often in middle-aged and older adults.
