There are many different knee injuries that cause great pain and disability. These injuries include damage to the tendons, ligaments, bones, bursae and joint capsule. Injuries to the ligaments and tendons are named according to the injured tendon or ligament. The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is often injured in the course of playing sports along with the medial collateral ligament (MCL) and the medial menicus. In the picture to the right, Tom Brady suffered injuries to all three areas, and when this occurs it is known as the "terrible triad". To avoid injuries to the knee, be sure to warm up properly before any exercise. If you do happen to injure your knee, do not put weight on it. Lie down and rest while icing and elevating the knee so as to prevent swelling, and call our office as soon as possible to schedule an appointment.
