tmj painTemporomandibular joint syndrome or TMJ is a very painful condition that affects the area where the jaw connects to the sides of the skull.  TMJ impairs function and sensation in the face and jaw. The pain sometimes spreads to the ears, neck, and possibly the shoulders. Research has yet to define all the causes of TMJ. Some medical or dental procedures, oral habits, injury, and other of joint diseases and disorders like arthritis, can precipitate or aggravate TMJ. Some symptoms of TMJ may include: facial pain, jaw joint pain, snapping or popping, grinding or clicking sounds as the joint opens and closes, as well as possible swelling on the side of the face and/or mouth.
